Recalculate
Most parents are willing to step out of their comfort zone, some might even push beyond their boundaries and ‘non-negotiables’ to ensure a better world for their children. Comfort and safety are primary considerations for all parents. However, life is unpredictable, and even in the most controlled environments, unexpected events and Black Swan phenomena can occur.
Familiarity Can Hide What Matters
Some of the things we value most can become easy to overlook. When life gets busy, I can lose sight of what matters to me, including time with family. I sometimes feel self-conscious or overwhelmed around people I love; that feeling is worth noticing before it turns into distance. I don’t think one explanation fits every family or every teenager.

When it Finally Occurs
Life changes, and what once worked may no longer fit. When circumstances shift, we can reassess our direction, beliefs, and choices, then decide what to adjust.
Recalculate and Recalibrate
Recalculating can help us notice what an unexpected event has brought into focus. We can reconsider our values, commitments, work, and relationships. That process may bring uncertainty, tension, or relief; people experience it differently. The useful question is what, if anything, we want to change.
Stepping back to examine our behaviors with a discerning eye, pausing the hustle of daily life, and observing the rest of the world in a kind of freeze state are part of the process of opening up. What aspects have been overlooked or overshadowed by daily routines and preoccupations? Where have we become too fixated on certain things that hinder our growth and prevent us from embracing new possibilities? The act of recalculating encourages us to find balance, make conscious decisions, and align with a new version of ourselves.
As we look towards the future, what most of us perceive as a challenging task can suddenly seem much easier in a moment of clarity. This enhanced understanding will allow us to envision where we want to be in a month, five or ten years from now. What should change in our lives to make them more desirable? Imagining the environment and lifestyle we aspire to, daily activities we enjoy, and services we can provide to others becomes part of a fluid dialogue with our inner selves. By delving into our futures, we gain clarity about what truly matters to us.
However, just knowing where we want to go is not enough; we must also identify the obstacles that stand in our way. What aspects of our current reality hinder the realization of our vision? Which habits or actions are incongruent with our aspirations? And what recent revelations have surfaced that show us alternative paths to achieve our goals, perhaps in ways we never expected?
Recalculating is not a one-time event. As circumstances change, we can keep reviewing our choices and adjusting our direction. Take a moment to ask what still fits and what you want to change.
